Hukilau came recommended to us, but I can't say that either Sarah or I were particularly impressed on our one brunch visit. The interior is cute and full of the expected Hawaiiana, with a long bar dividing the two seating areas.

After an inexplicably long wait (there were available tables everywhere) we were seated, and then treated to another inexplicably long wait before we got menus, water, or were asked if we wanted coffee. 5 minutes later our waitress returned and asked "you guys wanted coffee, right?" - sigh!

Sarah ordered eggs with spam and I had the brunch order of loco moco, a hamburger patty atop rice, with a fried egg on top, and smothered in gravy. Another lenghthy wait ensued. Our food finally arrived and Sarah eggs were extremely over-cooked; rather than a fluffy mass, they were nasty piles of burned rubber. They also lacked the green onions described in the menu. My dish fared better, and was overall pretty good (but a lot of food for breakfast!). The hamburger patty wasn't the most flavorful, but the gravy was alright, and the combination of flavors and textures worked pretty well.

There's something of a Hawaiian trend going around right now, and I will certainly try out other similar places in/near the city before even thinking of returning to Hukilau. Maybe the extremely long waits were their way of making us experience "island time," but honestly, unless I'm actually ON an island, I don't want to be on "island time!"
