Death Valley Double Century

Sunrise just before the ride start in Furnace Creek
The mass start of around 160 riders at 7:15am in Furnace Creek
Morning glow on the Panamint Mountains
Kristin, happy and pleased to be riding in the pleasant morning climes
The sun, starting to illuminate (and heat up) Death Valley

The Panamint Mountains across Death Valley
A great morning paceline heading south from Badwater
A large salt flat accompanied me for quite a ways.
An excellent paceline I hopped onto out of Badwater and stayed with for the next 20-some-odd miles.
Climbing one of several long rollers into a headwind, just before the Ashford Mills rest stop.

Fighting one last set of gentle rollers (into a headwind, naturally), almost to the Ashford Mills rest stop
A colorful mountain towers thousands of feet above the Ashford Mills rest stop
One of the amusingly-dressed staffers at Ashford Mills cops a feel :)

Kristin, cresting Jubilee Pass. She wisely decided to turn around here and do a century, while I foolishly continued onwards.
Woohoo - on top of Jubilee Pass. Although its only about 1300ft high, we did start at about -150, so its a bit more of a climb than it sounds.
Lovely view from the water stop midway up the Salsburry Pass climb. I decided this was a fine place to turn around and head back to Furnace Creek

The Ashford Mills rest stop, on my way back. The staffers seemed less chipper than they had on the way south, not to mention the riders!
This must've been a sick joke the NPS was playing on us.
More colorful mountains, hum de dum :)

Multicolored hills between Ashford Mills and Badwater
Although it was hot and I was suffering, at least the views were nice!
Even with the semi-shade provided by the clouds, it was very hot, about 104F. Just around this mountain is where I called it quits.
