2002 Mt. Whitney Trip Day 1

Next Day
Thursday, 08 August:
I left Fremont at 3, a bit later than I had intended, due to stopping by Fry's
and REI to get some camera memory/batteries, and last-minute supplies,
respectively. Traffic wasn't too bad, however, and I arrived at my folks'
place in Auburn at around 6. The local Cambria Bicycle Emporium was having a
Tour de France end party, so we went by there and snacked and drank and
chatted with folks. Afterwards, we went to the Roseville REI and got even
more last-minute supplies. They had a really nice Kelty trekking pack, which
I picked up, and when I jokingly suggest that my father, Barry, buy it for me,
he agreed! Cool! :-)
We spent the remainder of the evening getting all of our gear together and
into our day packs, and reading and re-reading the various guidebooks we had
on hiking Mt. Whitney. I didn't sleep too terribly well, a trend which would
worsen before it got better!
