Friday, 09 August:
The alarm went off at 7, and Barry & I were on the road by 8. It was a long (6.5 hrs + stops), but uneventful, drive to Lone Pine, and we arrived at around 3. We went up Whitney Portal Rd. to Lone Pine Campground our campsite at the Lone Pine Campground and checked in. We had a nice view of Mt. Whitney from camp, and many times I looked up at it and wondered what the heck we were doing! We continued to Whitney Portal in the hopes of finding a campsite closer to the trailhead to no avail. Oh well. Lone Pine Campground is only about a 20min drive from the trailhead, although it would have been nice to camp at a higher elevation.

Lone
Pine Lake After we checked out the wares at the Whitney Portal store, we hiked from the trailhead to Lone Pine Lake on the Whitney Trail to get a feel for the terrain we'd be hiking in the dark in 2 days (we couldn't legally go any farther, as we didn't have a permit for Friday, and a permit is required for all hikes on the main Mount Whitney Trial, be they day hikes or backpacking trips). This was a good aclimitazation hike, only 2.5 miles each way, and took us about 2.5 hrs round-trip. The lake was very pretty, and reflected the surrounding mountains nicely. Afterwards, we had a tasty dinner at the Mt. Whitney Restaurant in Lone Pine. We went back to camp and pitched out tents and crashed out moderately early.
